Mirabai Chanu, India's 2017 world champion, ahead of the World Weightlifting Championships 2029 in Ahmedabad

Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu will lead India at the World Weightlifting Championships 2026 in Ningbo, China. The event runs from October 27 to November 8. Chanu will compete in the women’s 53kg category. Moreover, the championship is the first of 10 qualifying events for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

India’s weightlifting team will compete at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre in China. In addition, organisers expect more than 500 athletes to take part in the prestigious event.

All eyes will be on Mirabai Chanu. She won silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and also represented India at Paris 2024. This time, the 32-year-old will lead the Indian challenge as she starts a new Olympic cycle.

Mirabai Chanu Moves to the 53kg Category

Mirabai Chanu will compete in the women’s 53kg category because she is preparing for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Previously, Chanu competed in the 49kg division and won Olympic silver at Tokyo 2020. However, organisers have dropped the 49kg category from the LA 2028 programme. As a result, she has moved up to 53kg.

Therefore, the World Championships in Ningbo give Chanu an important chance to compete in her new category. She can also start building her Olympic qualification ranking.

World Weightlifting Championships 2026: Road to LA 2028 Olympics

To begin with, the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships are the first of 10 qualifying events on the road to LA 2028.

Under the Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) system, weightlifters need three total results in the first qualification period. They then need two more in the second period. Each total combines an athlete’s best snatch and best clean and jerk. In addition, athletes must record all qualifying results in the same Olympic weight category.

The ranking then counts each athlete’s three best totals from the first period and two best from the second. Furthermore, each kilogram in the total counts as one ranking point.

Finally, the top eight eligible lifters in each Olympic weight category will earn quota places for LA 2028. These places go to the athletes by name.

For Chanu and her teammates, the championships are therefore an important first step towards Olympic qualification.
