Rishabh Das Makes History in the Pool
Das delivered a remarkable performance to claim the men’s 200m backstroke title. His timing of 1:52.37 marked a major improvement on the previous national record.
Meanwhile, the Asian record stands at 1:48.25. Japan’s Masaki Kaneko set that mark in 2016. Therefore, Das’s performance puts his achievement into a wider Asian swimming context, although the two records remain several seconds apart.
What Is Short-Course Swimming?
Short-course swimming takes place in a 25-metre pool. In contrast, long-course swimming uses a 50-metre pool.
Major international competitions, including the Olympics, Asian Games and World Championships, use long-course pools. Consequently, short-course and long-course records are tracked separately because pool length affects race conditions and performance.
Das’s national record is a significant achievement for Indian swimming. Going forward, his performance will draw attention to his progress and potential in the backstroke events.
