India’s women’s team concluded their U20 Wrestling World Championships run with a total of 5 medals, including 1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze medals. The Indian women secured 2 medals on the day 5 of the ongoing event in Pontevedra, Spain, concluding the tournament in the second spot in the team rankings.
Nitika had to settle for the silver medal in the Women’s 62kg category after suffering a defeat against Iryna Bondar of Ukraine with a score of 1-4. Neha secured a bronze medal in the Women’s 57kg category after impressively beating Carissa Danielle Qureshi of the USA through technical superiority with a score of 15-4 in the repechage. Subsequently, Neha went on to defeat Gerda Terek of Hungary 10-8 in the bronze medal match.
While the day brought podium finishes for some Indian grapplers, Jyoti (53kg) and Sarika (65kg) faced disappointment after both lost their respective bronze medal bouts. Jyoti suffered a defeat to Saki Yumiya from Japan with a score of 4-6, while Sarika succumbed to Zaixue Rui from China with a score of 3-7.
The Indian women’s team secured a respectable second-place finish in the team standings with a total score of 130 points. The team of Japan emerged as the winners, earning 149 points, while the United States clinched the third spot with a score of 101 points.
