Vinesh Phogat secured India’s 4th medal at the Paris Olympics as she advanced to the final of the Women’s 50kg category at the Grand Palais Éphémère in Champ de Mars on Tuesday. This accomplishment makes her the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the final in Olympic history.
Vinesh initiated her campaign by stunning the defending Olympic champion and four-time World Champion Yui Sasaki of Japan with a score of 3-2. Throughout the match, Vinesh was trailing 0-2 until the closing seconds when she managed to earn a takedown for two points. The Japanese team challenged the call, but it was ultimately ruled in favor of Vinesh, granting her an additional point.
Subsequently, the 29-year-old wrestler triumphed over Oksana Livach of Ukraine with a score of 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
Vinesh achieved victory over Yusneylys Guzmán of Cuba with a score of 5-0 in a dominant show in the semifinals. She will now compete against Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA for the Gold medal tomorrow.
