In this article, the qualification scenario for India’s chances for the World Test Championship final is explained.
First and foremost, India has to win the last test against Australia. By doing so, they will also retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and keep their hopes alive for the WTC final.
If India wins the last test, the percentage of WTC points will stand as follows:
- India: 55.26%
- Australia: 57.84%
India would still finish below Australia in terms of points. However, India will depend on Sri Lanka to do the job for them. Although, Sri Lanka winning both of their matches against Australia will not guarantee a final spot for them.
Here is the actual scenario for the Sri Lanka vs Australia series:
If India wins the SCG test (WTC Points – India 55.26% & Australia 57.84%)
From India’s perspective, there are only two possible results that will push them to the WTC final:
- Sri Lanka winning both tests against Australia.
- Sri Lanka winning the first test and drawing the second test.
Australia shouldn’t win any games against Sri Lanka. If they win any one of the matches, Australia will go through to the final.
However, if India loses the Sydney test, Australia will confirm their spot in the WTC final irrespective of what happens in the Sri Lanka series.
