India Steps Up Push to Become Global Sporting Destination

The Indian government is strengthening its ambition to establish India as a global sporting destination, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewing the country’s plans to host major international sporting events.

A review meeting was held in Ahmedabad covering India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics, along with preparations to host the 2029 World Police and Fire Games and the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

The 2036 Olympics remains the biggest ambition, with Ahmedabad at the centre of India’s proposed hosting plans. Hosting the Games would require significant development of sporting infrastructure and provide India with an opportunity to showcase its capabilities on the global stage.

The government is also preparing for the 2029 World Police and Fire Games and the 2030 Commonwealth Games, which could serve as important platforms to demonstrate India’s ability to organise large-scale international competitions.

These plans go beyond simply hosting events. They could help accelerate the development of sports infrastructure, athlete facilities and grassroots sporting opportunities across the country.

With multiple major events being targeted over the next decade, India is looking to strengthen its position not only as a growing sporting nation but also as a destination for global sporting events.
