Railway Sports won seven of the 14 finals on Day 2 of the National Open Athletics Championships 2026 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, on 9 October. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu’s Akash Raj won the men’s 400m by two hundredths of a second. In addition, Karnataka’s Manikanta Hoblidhar won the men’s 100m in 10.25.
However, no meet records fell on the second day, unlike the three on Day 1. Still, several finals came down to fractions of a second. Railway Sports also swept the women’s 1500m and the women’s half marathon race walk.

Sprints at the National Open Athletics Championships 2026
100m men. Manikanta Hoblidhar (Karnataka) won in 10.25 into a -0.1 m/s headwind. Moreover, he finished well clear of Lalu Prasad Bhoi (Railway Sports), who took silver in 10.43. Laukik Melge (SSCB) won bronze in 10.45, just ahead of teammate Rushiprasad Desai (10.48). Further back, only 0.008 seconds separated Harjit (10.581) and Shivam Vashnav (10.589) for fifth.
400m men. Akash Raj (Tamil Nadu) won gold in 46.24. Vikrant Panchal (Railway Sports), however, was only 0.02 seconds behind in 46.26. Mijo Kurian (SSCB) then took bronze in 46.45. Tamil Nadu also had Ajay D and Sharan M in fourth and fifth.
400m women. Similarly, the women’s 400m produced a tight finish. Anjli (Haryana) won in 53.37, while Priya Mohan (Karnataka) took silver in 53.55. Priya Thakur (Himachal Pradesh) was just 0.01 seconds further back in 53.56 for bronze.
Hurdles finals: SSCB one-two in the men’s race
110m hurdles men. Muhammed Lazan VK (SSCB) won in 13.70 into a -0.7 m/s headwind. As a result, SSCB took a one-two, with A. Graceson Jeeva second in 13.85. Manav R (Railway Sports) then completed the podium in 13.97.
100m hurdles women. Moumita Mondal (Railway Sports) won in 13.48. Anjali C (All India Police), meanwhile, took silver in 13.50. Nandhini K (Tamil Nadu) also won bronze in 13.53 in a close finish.
Middle distance and race walks at the National Open Athletics Championships 2026
1500m men. This was the closest race of the day. In fact, only 0.15 seconds covered the first four runners. Arjun Waskale (Railway Sports) won in 3:43.04, while teammate Shivam Sharma took silver in 3:43.12. Rahul Baloda (SSCB) then edged his teammate Shailabh for bronze, 3:43.14 to 3:43.19.
1500m women. By contrast, Ankita (Railway Sports) won by almost six seconds in 4:13.18. Lili Das (4:19.05) and Komal Jagadale (4:22.67) also finished second and third, so Railway Sports swept the podium.
Half marathon race walk women. Railway Sports also swept this event. Mokavi Muthurathina won in 1:45:39, just four seconds ahead of Munita Prajapati (1:45:43). Bhawna Jat then took bronze in 1:46:47.
Half marathon race walk men. Meanwhile, Suraj Panwar (Uttarakhand) won in 1:30:48. Deepak Gurjar (Delhi) finished second in 1:30:55, while Vishvendra Singh (Madhya Pradesh) took bronze in 1:31:32.
Field events: Tamil Nadu double in the triple jump
Triple jump men. Sebastian V S (SSCB) won with 16.54 m in round four. Tamil Nadu, however, took the other two medals. Dinesh V jumped 16.33 m with his final attempt for silver. Mohanraj J then won bronze with 16.29 m.
Shot put women. Veteran Manpreet Kaur (Railway Sports) won with 17.07 m. Srishti Vig (Delhi) took silver with 16.11 m, while Rekha (Railway Sports) won bronze with 15.72 m.
Discus throw men. Meanwhile, just 44 centimetres covered the medallists. Dharamraj Yadav (SSCB) won with 55.90 m, ahead of teammate Abhimanyu (55.64 m). Nirbhay Singh (Railway Sports) then took bronze with his final throw of 55.46 m.
Decathlon and mixed relay finals
Decathlon men. Yaman Deep Sharma (Railway Sports) won with 7068 points. Notably, he was only third after six events, behind leader Jinoy Jayan. Jinoy, however, scored just 404 points in the discus and finished fifth with 6886. Usaid (SSCB) took silver with 7005 points, while Gokul K R (Kerala) won bronze with 6975.
Mixed 4x100m relay. Finally, Railway Sports won in 42.82. Their team included Tamil Arasu S, Abhin Devadiga, Avantika Narale and Giridharani Ravikumar. Delhi took silver in 43.75, while Haryana edged Tamil Nadu for bronze, 43.97 to 44.03.
Tamil Nadu at the National Open Athletics Championships 2026
Tamil Nadu won four medals on Day 2: one gold, one silver and two bronze. Akash Raj led the way with gold in the men’s 400m. In addition, Dinesh V and Mohanraj J took silver and bronze in the triple jump. Nandhini K also won bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Several other Tamil Nadu athletes also reached finals. Ajay D (46.94) and Sharan M (46.97) finished fourth and fifth in the 400m. Meanwhile, Yamini Karthikeyan and Akschida S placed seventh and eighth in the 100m hurdles. Paari Kabilan was sixth in the 110m hurdles, while Gitson I was seventh in the 100m in 10.60. The mixed relay team also finished fourth in 44.03.
In the decathlon, John Paul J was sixth with 6679 points, while Sudharsan M was eighth with 6096. Finally, Yogeswar R was ninth in the 1500m, and Om Prakash K was tenth in the race walk.
Medal table after Day 2
On Day 2 alone, Railway Sports won seven gold, five silver and five bronze medals. As a result, they lead the overall table after 21 finals.
