India clinched its first women’s team title in UWW U17 Wrestling World Championships with a total score of 185 points at the ongoing Championships in Amman, Jordan. The Indian women secured 4 medals, including a gold medal on the fifth day of competition, finish with a total of 5 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
Kajal clinched India’s 5th gold medal of the competition, triumphing over Oleksandra Rybak of Ukraine with a score of 9-2 in the 69kg category final. Indian women had claimed 4 gold medals on the fourth day of the competition on Thursday.
Shrutika Patil had to settle for silver in the 46kg category after suffering a one-sided defeat to Japan’s Yuu Katsume in the final via technical superiority (0-12). Raj Bala secured the bronze medal in the 40kg category, triumphing over Monaka Umekawa in her bronze medal bout (11-5).
Muskan clinched the bronze medal in the 53kg category. She defeated Madkhiya Usmanova of Kazakhstan 8-1 and later outclassed the USA’s Isabella Marie Santos Gonzales via technical superiority (12-2) in the bronze medal match.
However, it was a disappointing outcome for Rajnitha in the 61kg category as she failed to win the bronze medal. After winning her repechage match against Orsolja Habi of Serbia via technical superiority 10-0, she lost the bronze medal bout to Azerbaijan’s Hiunai Hurbanova 2-6.
India emerged victorious in the team championships, securing the first position with 185 points. They finished ahead of powerhouse Japan, which ranked second with a total of 145 points.
This marks India’s third team championship win in any World Championship across any age group. In 2021, the Indian U17 men’s freestyle team won the team championship, while the U20 Women’s team secured the team championship in the last year’s U20 World Championships.
