Hockey: Indian team kicked off their campaign New Zealand 3-2 in a thrilling encounter of their opening Pool-B hockey match in the Olympics at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium here on Saturday. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty stroke in 59th minute to give India a victory. India will face Argentina next on 29th July.
Table Tennis: Harmeet Desai defeated Zaid Abo Yaman of Jordan 4-0 (11-7, 11-9, 11-5, 11-5) in the preliminary round of the men’s singles category.
Boxing: India kicked off its campaign in Boxing with a victory as Preeti Pawar handily defeated Thi Kim Anh of Vietnam by unanimous decision, with a score of 5-0, in the Women’s 54kg category. She will play her pre-quarterfinals on July 30th.
Badminton: Lakshya Sen defeated the 37-year-old former Tokyo Olympics semifinalist Kevin Cordon of Guatemala with scores of 21-8 and 22-20 in his first Group L match.
The Men’s Doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty overcame the home crowd favorites Lucas Corvée and Ronan Labar with a score of 21-17 and 21-14 in their opening Group C encounter.
The Women’s Doubles partnership of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto fell to Kim So-yeong and Kong Hee-yong of South Korea, with scores of 18-21 and 10-21, in their first Group C match.
